During their growing stages, children tend to pick things up quickly and learn the ways of life based on their surroundings. To teach children a sense of responsibility, care, and trust at a young age, parents often turn to taking in a pet. Pets are mini living beings that provide comfort, company, and friendship to any family. Typically, families take in cats or dogs, but there are also more options like: birds, bunnies, lizards, fish, etc.

While considering what pet to get your young one, it's recommended to begin by introducing your children to pets that are lower maintenance like fish. Compared to bigger, more mobile animals, fish are the perfect first pet for young children. Of course, bigger animals can also be the perfect first pet to show responsibility so long as parents continue to monitor and make sure the child and pet are bonding. Remind your child that pets are living beings and once they agree to take in a pet, they need to continue to take care of them even after the “newness” wears off.

Here are some ways pets can teach children responsibility:

  1. Taking Care of a Pet: When pets are introduced to any home, a child needs to be talked to about the pet's diet, exercise, cleaning out the pets’ potty places, vaccinations, and how much time one should dedicate to a pet. This teaches children the basics to keeping any pet alive, and how to manage their time to do it all well.

  2. Physical Activity: When it comes down to most pets like dogs, they need to have specific hours of the day dedicated to their exercise. It encourages children to learn why they themselves need exercise and enjoy time with their pets.

  3. Trust: When holding pets and taking care of them, kids need to be gentle. Sometimes, some kids can’t measure how much strength they put into their petting, so having a pet teaches kids to trust in themselves as well as others when they apply the same gentleness to actual people. It teaches them boundaries and how to respect them.

If you’re unsure how to begin to research pets for your family, try: watching videos, taking a class, visiting local pet stores, and talking to other families with pets.
